GENERAL SUMMARY

  • Responsible for supervising the design, redesign and development of concept, new, existing and current military, HUMMER and other vehicles, subassemblies, and detailed parts of considerable technical magnitude.  Programs require extensive analysis and interpretation of specifications and standards applicable to vehicles and/or assemblies.
  • Position encompasses the incorporation of customer requirements and specifications, functional design of the vehicle and/or major component, prototype fabrications and build-up, test, development and introduction into vehicle production. Assures cost effectiveness throughout various program phases. Scope and complexity of the program requires direction of engineers, mechanical, electrical, test and other disciplines. Also provides functional guidance to other departments which provide technical support to achieve overall objectives.

 

  • As a Vehicle Systems Engineer (VSE) expertise in one or more of the following vehicle systems is a must:
  • Chassis and Chassis Systems (Steering, Structure, Suspension, Brakes, Driveline)
  • Body Interior/Exterior Electrical
  • HVAC
  • Powertrain

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises engineering projects involving design, redesign, and development of current and existing vehicles or extensive modification of existing subassemblies, detailed parts and fixtures to meet specifications. Participates in establishing design objectives and parameters to achieve the most cost-effective design approach consistent with end item performance and reliability objectives.
  • Plans and implements engineering programs related to actual or planned procurement by contract. Establishes project manpower requirements and schedules, maintains section management and ensures compliance with integrated schedules relating to design approvals and production releases. Assures that product meets applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Analyze field and test failures and define corrective action. Interpret product descriptions and define sub-system requirements and component level specifications. As the vehicle chassis is the backbone of the vehicle, Chassis Eng. must interface with all major vehicle sub-systems to provide overall vehicle stiffness, as well as structural attachments for sub-systems. Generate test plans, procure, and manage testing, summarize results, present artifacts, and recommend course of action.
  • Determines test requirements, analyzes, evaluates, and approves test results. Works directly with customer representatives to resolve design problems. Coordinates the experimental prototype build of end items for acceptance by the customer when required. Responsible for engineering releases of designs at prototype, test or development phase of program.
  • Resolves actual and/or potential production stoppages by analyzing design, materials, specifications, contract documentation, material availability, tooling and manufacturing methods. Participates in determination of least costly solution through engineering efforts to resolve production problems involving redesign, verification testing and supplier coordination.
  • Attend and/or lead meetings to discuss technical matters of programs and explain program schedules and status. Prepares extensive written reports or makes verbal presentations covering program phases. Responds to inquiries from superiors or customers.
  • Maintains contact with vendors and suppliers to keep abreast of new products, new sources, prices and lead times. Discusses new design approaches to determine manufacturing feasibility and obtain planning costs estimates for tooling and components. Solicits vendor participation in standardization, product improvement and cost reductions for AM General products.
  • Provides technical support to AMG and customer field units. Keeps current with field performance reports, evaluates problems from the field and may recommend or implement corrective action if required. May investigate problems at field locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & SKILLS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and eight plus years of engineering experience including vehicle design, test and overall development, or twelve plus years of equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering budget planning and cost effectiveness.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and plant personnel, vendors and others.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. 
  • The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. 
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and or move objects up to 25 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
